More travel information

The roads of Koh Phangan are improving every year. Nevertheless, the road to Thong Nai Pan remains only partially covered in concrete and traverses a rainforest jungle; thus a 4WD is required to safely drive to and from Thong Nai Pan. The terrain surrounding Thong Nai Pan is mountainous with both concrete and dirt roads linking the local villages and beaches. Some of these roads, such as the road from Thong Nai Pan Noi beach to Sunrise Villa, are steep while others are rutted from rain-erosion, therefore for your convenience we recommend hiring a 4WD vehicle. Common hire vehicles are 4WD Suzuki Vitara / Caribbean jeeps; though we recommend hiring a more robust vehicle such as any 4WD pick-up truck (Toyota Hilux / Vigo; Isuzu D-Max; Nissan Navara; Ford Ranger, etc.). Our rental agent will be happy to organize an appropriate hire car to be delivered to you on your arrival; alternatively there are car hire businesses across Phangan.

Jeep and Car Hire
Suzuki jeep
  • Jeeps are approximately 1,500 Thai Baht (£32 / $50) per day to rent (not recommended for Thong Nai Pan)
  • Larger 4 wheel drive pick-up trucks are approximately 2,500 Thai Baht (£53 / $84) per day to rent (recommended for Thong Nai Pan)
  • Please state weather you drive Manual or Automatic Transmission / Gears
  • You are required to leave your passport with the rental company
  • Buy insurance if it is available and check the car thoroughly, photographing any existing damage before taking a vehicle. Some unscrupulous hire shops have been known to overcharge for damages or even charge new clients for old damages.
  • We do not recommend hiring motorcycles as the roads to Thong Nai Pan are really only suitable for 4WD vehicles. Accidents are common and they can ruin a holiday: most bikes are not insured so even a small scratch can be costly.
Motorbikes and ATVs
Honda sonic and Yamaha mio

You can rent Japanese scooters, scrambler motorbikes and ATVs easily in Thongsala or Thong Nai Pan Noi. They are a cheap and convenient way to get round. However, the roads in Koh Phangan, especially after heavy rain or long dry spells can be dangerous. We recommend only experienced riders hire motorbikes or ATVs.

  • Fully automatic Yamaha Mio costs about 250 Thai Baht a day
  • Honda MTX125 Dirt Bike costs about 350 Thai Baht a day
  • ATVs cost about 1,500 Thai Baht a day
  • You must leave your passport with the rental company
  • If the motorbike or ATV is in any way damaged expect to pay a hefty fine

Rules of the Road
roads in Koh Phangan

The same rules of the road apply in Koh Phangan as they do anywhere else in the world. We recommend keeping your speed down to 40 km / hour for your own safety.

  • People drive on the left in Thailand
  • You cannot drink and drive
  • Never leave valuables in the basket of a bike or in the back of a jeep
  • You will be fined for not wearing a helmet on a motorbike

If you don't mind climbing a hill to get to your villa, then there is no reason why you can't just use the occasional taxi. Taxis are available in Thong Nai Pan Noi Village and will run you up to the villa for 200 Thai Baht.
